For Immediate Release

Concerned that the Belizean people are already overburdened by the rising cost of living and the deteriorating economic situation in Belize, the People’s United Party is calling on the Public Utilities Commission to reject the proposal by the Belize Water Services Limited (BWSL) for an increase in rates.

The proposal by BWSL, is seeking to raise the cost of water by 25 cents on every dollar currently being spent by consumers.   Such a massive increase will create added hardship and undue burden on consumers, especially the poorest Belizeans.

Belize Water Services Ltd. is a national company and is therefore owned by the Government of Belize in the name of the Belizean People.

As such this request for increase is being put on the Belizean People by the Barrow Administration, who promised Belizeans in their UDP manifesto that they would bring down the cost of utilities.

The PUP therefore holds the Barrow Administration responsible for the request for an increase in water rates and calls on the Prime Minister to honour his promise to the Belizean people to bring down the cost of utilities.
